Fighting in the Sky

By John Fairley

This Pen & Sword book is indeed a little different from the books I normally read. My main interest is World War 2, globally, in all its facets. This book however is about military aviation, over various periods and hence in other battles than just WW2. What’s more, its focus is on ART. But far from being a so-called ‘coffee table’ book, that only serves to page through the pictures while waiting for the dentist.

All drawings and paintings in this book are made by people who were actually THERE, involved in the actions. And that makes all the artwork so much more special.

Add to that the sometimes extensive and always interesting narrative accompanying many of the images, and this makes for a truly magnificent book.

My personal favourite story is the episode describing some of the aerial battles during the Falklands War, a period not covered very often. But there are many more interesting stories that are well worth reading….. and looking at !

Because most of all, this is a book to watch, and study, and watch some more. Obviously, as with all art, not every piece is of my taste, but the mix of pictures and stories makes that no part of this book will be skipped. Large format and printed on heavy paper, doing the artwork justice.

Above all my thanks and admiration goes to all the artists published here. Not only for their artwork, but most certainly also for their service!
