M7 Priest

(Images of War series)
by David Doyle

Admittedly I never looked into the history of artillery much, but maybe that will change after reading this book. I actually acquired it because I am a fan of the M4 Sherman in all its forms, and the M7 was based on its predecessor, the M3 Medium tank…… and later on the M4 as well.

This (photo)book does an excellent job in showing all the different versions and their development during the war (and even after). There are lots of very clear photos of the various M7’s during development, photos taken in the US during trials and training. These are obviously of much better quality than the photos taken in the field during the action.

Having said that, there are plenty photos of the M7 in action, a treasure cove for diorama modellers as well as historians.

The captions of the photos are informative, telling the history of the M7, and often indicate the location of the photo. Apart from the captions there is a useful introduction on how the M7 came into being. And there are four appendices with information about the production numbers, the specifications and the overview of a typical armored field artillery battalion.

Last but not least, there’s a small but very nice section with color photographs showing some of the M7 that have survived until today !

I truly enjoyed this book and will very likely use it in future when I get myself a scale model of an M7 !
